As many of you know my old and dear friend Neal Casal passed away two weeks ago.
I had just had a text conversation with him while he was at Lockn festival and getting ready to play with Bob Weir and friends that evening. He told me the Circles Around the Sun set was great a few days before and seemed in good spirits. It was the last time I would be able to communicate with him.
I've known Neal a long time. My band 6 String Drag played Neal's wedding over 20 years ago. Neal took me on tour with him to Europe as his opening act and duo partner in 1999 when my band broke up. He was always a huge supporter of my music. We will miss him in this world.
As many of you also know Neal was supposed to produce my new solo record in a few weeks out in California.
Neal left me a note before he left us telling me that he wanted me to continue on and make the record. He said "The work's already done. Let the songs tell you what to do". That's what we're gonna do. We're keeping the same band together that Neal had helped put together for the record.
I'm honored to announce that Dave Schools is gonna step in as producer for the record. Many of you know Dave from the band Hard Working Americans that he started with Neal and also as a founding member of Widespread Panic. Neal and Dave exchanged many texts about records they were producing and Neal had sent Dave some of the demos I'd made for the record. Neal really loved my new songs and believed in them and Dave shares the enthusiasm for the record that Neal and I had. He and I are really happy that we'll get to continue where Neal and I left off. We both think Neal would have loved that Dave and I would be working on the record together.
